- Use your networks – every person you talk to or come in contact with could be a valuable lead to a job. You need to spread the word around that you are looking for a new apprenticeship many jobs never even get advertised they are snapped up by someone in the “know”! Ask your TAFE teachers for contacts and ideas. Visit retailers or suppliers who service your industry and ask if you can leave copies of your resume on their counter. They might even include your resume in their customer mailouts!
- Use online search engines – the internet is now the most powerful employment tool! You need to be on the net searching, connecting and applying! We have listed the best Aussie ones here.
- Be ready for opportunities that come your way! Make sure you are prepared for any interviews you might get. Find out about the company you are applying to – THIS IS A MUST DO! Think up some answer to some likely questions so you will be prepared.
- Look into government incentives available for employers to take on out of trade apprentices. The Australian government both federal and state has a range of incentives for employers. Investigate this information so you know what is available. You can let a prospective employer know about incentives and you never know that may be the difference between them hiring you or not! If you would like more information about incentives contact your Community Apprentice Coordinator.
- Think outside your local area. If you are really committed to becoming a trade’s person you might have to think about getting a job outside your local area. There may be opportunities you have never heard of interstate or in another region. There is assistance available for relocation costs to help you get back into your apprenticeship. Speak to the Community Apprentice Coordinator for more information!
- Have you thought of the Defence Force? The Defence Force is a great place to finish your trade. Go to www.defencejobs.gov.au
- Advertise in the local paper in the work wanted section, call your local radio station and see if they can help market you to potential employers!
- Ring local councils and ask for the Apprentice Coordinator – they might have some opportunities.
- Apply for all stages of apprenticeships advertised in your trade – perhaps an employer hasn’t thought about someone who is partially qualified.
- THE BOTTOM LINE – get out amongst it – talk – email – send letters it will all help in the long run and you never know where your next job might come from!
